A Homeschooling Year Comes To A Close

We are almost to the end of our first homeschooling year. At the start of the year I wrote a post about my feelings on homeschooling.
Why I home-school If you want a little blast from my past, you can go back and check it out.

I wanted to do a little follow up, now as we drift into the first glimpse of summer.

I am passionate about home education because I feel there is no better person than a parent to teach. I have been with them since birth. I am very familiar with their learning styles, emotions and strengths. As their parent, I am able to set up learning in our home to reflect their needs.
For us education is a very organic process. It weaves its way through our daily lives naturally. How does that take shape?
Well, we cook together and learn the skills of being in the kitchen.
We read, (constantly) we enjoy picture books, informational books and the classics. Currently, we are moving through Anne of Green Gables. Yep, she is in fact, interested.
We take nature walks. At an early age I got the kids outside and admiring God's creation. We observe the birds, take not of clouds and collect things to study.
I encourage physical activity. Right now even, I hear the sounds of the kiddos playing outside and  splashing in the pool. Children were not meant to be cooped up indoors! I have very active children who thrive on being in the outside and running around. I honestly believe many of the children who have a medication pushed at them would do better at home, free to run around outside as needed.
ADHD Diagnosis and treatment n the rise
I think the most important phase of education in our home is discussion. We talk about everything under the sun. I ask them many questions and we have had some amazing results because of it. Why, who and what are popular words in our house.
Also, play!!! Playing with children is how they learn. We think of it as play but, really it is them learning about their world and putting ideas in to practice.
Finally, I do have bookwork. We have a set time each day we do school. We study math, english, history, and practice writing. Bella is at a 2nd grade level (if you want to label it) in most of her studies. If she is interested in a subject I push as far as she is interested in being pushed. If she is struggling with a subject (math for example) I gently guide her.
I want learning to be a joy and to be exciting!
Homeschooling is a lot of work. I am constantly working on new ideas for the kids, and keeping our approach fresh.
At some points people have impplied that I might have free time, or be home all day. A good homeschooling mom doesn't have vast amounts of free time. I am the bridge that spans the rushing waters of ignorance for my children. If I don't help them cross there is not teacher waiting to catch them. It is a very serious, wonderful job and I am looking forward to year two next year!
